RootsTech 2024 is all done and dusted, and I am back home and all the washing
has been done.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing">This
year’s theme was <b>Remember</b>, and I have already written about it and its
impact on me. But it wasn’t just me. Many people I spoke to commented on it
being such a powerful theme. During the first keynote speech, Steve Rockwood,
CEO of FamilySearch International, showed the Remember Video and became clearly
emotional about it.</p>

theme <b>Remember</b> was also relevant to the journey RootsTech has made: from
a small conference of about 3,000 people, to a worldwide audience of millions.</p>

speaker, Nancy Borowick, was spot-on to the theme. Her talk was about her
parents, and their battles with cancer, though she said that her story was not
a story about cancer and dying: it was a story about living. Her photographs of
her parents were her tribute to them, and her very important message was that “the
people you love live on inside of you, because they are part of who you are.” You can watch her story <a href="https://www.familysearch.org/en/rootstech/session/nancy-borowick-keynote-rootstech-2024" target="_blank">here</a>.</p>

of the Keynotes for the 2024 RootsTech conference has just been announced. It
is Lynne M. Jackson. She is an author, president and founder of the <a href="https://dredscottlives.org/" target="_blank">Dred Scott Heritage Foundation</a>.</p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing">Now, I
admit I have never heard of her, or this foundation, but when I read about it,
I think it sounds like it will be a very interesting talk. That’s the thing I
have found about past RootsTech conferences – even when I don’t know who the keynote
is, I’ve still found them fascinating.</p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing">Dred and
Harriet Scott were an enslaved couple who fought for their freedom and their
case ended up in the US Supreme Court in 1857. The ruling of the U.S. Supreme
Court was that enslaved people were not citizens of the United States and,
therefore, could not expect any protection from the federal government or the

so many things I love about attending a RootsTech Conference in person.
Attending the talks of course, although they are also available on the online
RootsTech Conference. Experiencing the buzz of the Expo Hall and seeing all
sorts of interesting booths and demos of their products. And then there are the
people. It's a great opportunity to making new friends who also
share a love of genealogy, and catching up with friends who I have met at past
conferences. Thanks to RootsTech I have so many friends from around the world
who I would probably never have met if I hadn’t attended RootsTech conferences.</p>

I think that is a very appropriate theme, as remembering our ancestors is such
an important part of our family history.</p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing"><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrFE9CUlNR3P3fMuto46bFrpYi5UREN0khh9VZqIE8jtVjEhvW-HYbA0h3x-C7I5T8yhNkLNUhl0RN4ewzcyVLbJx5OfE_ZIHKkdI70ftIqqdVqTHiN7rYjUqQvZrfqyO-ljuEZK-OnejtKsXpeK7TVSuqcX44KCpxPAkln40S_zv4LV1fUSV58IwvwKU/s1024/Jenny%20Gibbons%20&%20Dot%20Spiller%201.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="711" data-original-width="1024" height="222" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrFE9CUlNR3P3fMuto46bFrpYi5UREN0khh9VZqIE8jtVjEhvW-HYbA0h3x-C7I5T8yhNkLNUhl0RN4ewzcyVLbJx5OfE_ZIHKkdI70ftIqqdVqTHiN7rYjUqQvZrfqyO-ljuEZK-OnejtKsXpeK7TVSuqcX44KCpxPAkln40S_zv4LV1fUSV58IwvwKU/w320-h222/Jenny%20Gibbons%20&%20Dot%20Spiller%201.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Nanny (Dorothy Spiller, nee Highett) and me</td></tr></tbody></table>My interest in family history started with the stories my
maternal grandmother used to tell me. Nanny, as we called her, was raised by
her grandparents, so the stories she told me went back to my g-g-grandparents.
She’d tell me about how she used to get into trouble for singing at the dinner
table, and how her favourite part of going to church was singing the hymns.
Other stories about her were told to me by my mother. These included the fact
that Nanny’s grandfather was a very strict Baptist and wouldn’t let her go out
to dances or things like that, but when he joined the bowling club and spoke to
other men with daughters Nanny’s age, he found that they DID let their
daughters go to these things, and so Nanny was subsequently allowed to do so
herself. She therefore thought the bowling club was a very good thing.</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEis-88w71IA_jA7AEOkl_3ZvLCqD_I-P06vqizkoozhHc4QT1mKMHDmiWB6HdAXJ6dsyVvXHDet3IvcGTduJeVkdpDql6Y8ABXIFCEQUf7JSUTWVNQyGmLkxKv7X29LAkMk_oS4d5a90LjBTFG18YcmzHl2ix9cNgX5qZ6fy-4p89vsvd7D_nS1-s7pfYE/s1024/Bowlers%20mod.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1024" data-original-width="882" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEis-88w71IA_jA7AEOkl_3ZvLCqD_I-P06vqizkoozhHc4QT1mKMHDmiWB6HdAXJ6dsyVvXHDet3IvcGTduJeVkdpDql6Y8ABXIFCEQUf7JSUTWVNQyGmLkxKv7X29LAkMk_oS4d5a90LjBTFG18YcmzHl2ix9cNgX5qZ6fy-4p89vsvd7D_nS1-s7pfYE/s320/Bowlers%20mod.jpg" width="276" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Nanny's grandfather (Adolphus Alway) on left with his bowling friends</td></tr></tbody></table><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><br /></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><o:p></o:p></p>

England at the time, on the obligatory working holiday, and I grew up with
stories about that time. As well as the poverty of the East End at the time,

<p class="MsoNoSpacing">She had a seat in a
stand along the procession route that allowed her to watch the proceedings. It
rained heavily on and off during that day and she recalled feeling very sorry

letters she had sent back to her parents while she was away.</p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing">I searched for the
letters covering the period of the coronation to see what she had to say.</p>
<blockquote><p align="right" class="MsoNoSpacing" style="text-align: right;"><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-AU;"><i><span style="font-family: helvetica;">31.6.53<o:p></o:p></span></i></span></p>

just returned from Paris. We arrived back to find the whole of London agog with
coronation fever. In the short time that we had been away London had been
transformed. Never before in history has London been such a blaze of colour -
nor could you ever imagine the seething mass of people. Travelling unless you
have all day to spare is a virtual impossibility.<o:p></o:p></span></i></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><span style="font-style: italic;"> </span><i>On Saturday afternoon last week
Denys drove his mother … & I</i> [sic] <i>around the coronation route. Doubtless
you have seen pictures in the Sydney papers which give you a better idea of
what the decorations are like than any word picture I could paint.<o:p></o:p></i></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><span style="font-style: italic;"> </span><i>Although I failed to gain a seat </i><i>in the ballot </i></span><span style="font-family: helvetica;">[in the stands to watch the procession]</span><i style="font-family: helvetica;"> </i><i style="font-family: helvetica;">I was lucky because, either
due to the fact that Australia House was given a larger allocation of seats than
they anticipated, or perhaps quite a few people made alternative arrangements, they
had a number over & consequently as so often happens by going in during the
week I got a seat in Piccadilly. Of course it cost £4 but I'm sure that I would
have never seen otherwise & I should imagine there will not be another
coronation in my lifetime.</i></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;"><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-AU;"><i><span style="font-family: helvetica;"> Seat or no seat we have to be in position

by Arthur & Denys albeit a trifle sleepy having been up since 4.30. I
nevertheless managed to stagger here armed with food & a thermos capped by
chocolates & a bottle of wine a present from the boys…<o:p></o:p></i></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><i><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>The crowd is extremely orderly &

proper already there seems to be a hushed air of expectancy. Amplifiers </i>[sic]<i>
have been placed at convenient points all along the route & the B.B.C. is
doing a magnificent job keeping up the spirits of a somewhat frozen crowd.
Anything that passes is greeted with cheers. Earlier two coaches passed
obviously carrying Abbey guests & a brave gentlemen on a push bike merrily
lifted his hat to the crowd as he pedalled along followed by cheers. The troops
have started to line the route & the police are practically shoulder to
shoulder along both sides of the Road. Never before have I seen so many
policemen.<o:p></o:p></i></span></p>

cold & miserable & rather subdued.<o:p></o:p></i></span></span></p>

crowded together could make so little noise. The B.B.C. really rose to the
occasion & the reception of the ceremony was excellent.<o:p></o:p></i></span></span></p>

<p class="MsoNoSpacing">I realise that her
letters were written on an air letter, so she had limited space to write, but I
was surprised that she didn’t mention her impressions of the gold state coach
(which, to me, looks like something out of Cinderella), or the length of the procession
(it was supposed to have taken 45 minutes to pass a single point), or the large
number of representatives of the armed forces of the Commonwealth countries. I was also surprised, given her comment about Winston Churchill in her letter, that she'd never mentioned it to me.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">I know that money was
tight when she was living in London, but I am also surprised that she never
brought back any coronation souvenirs, apart from a couple of postcards that
are in her photo album. The album also contained a couple of photos she took on
the day, which I have reproduced here. She did bring back the newspapers of the
day, which I remember seeing, but by the time the house was cleared my father
had thrown them out.</p>

was back in person this year, and although there had been keynotes during the
online conferences, there was something extra special in having live keynotes again.
There was an energy and an excitement from being in the Main Hall along with so
many other people, all listening to the people on stage. The keynotes this year
included Jordin Sparks, the youngest ever winner of <i>American Idol</i>, and photographer,
Me Ra Koh, but for me the best session was on the Saturday.</p>

up in the 60s watching Sean Astin’s parents on TV. <i>The Addams Family</i> starred
his father, John Astin, as Gomez Addams, and I regularly watched his mother’s
two roles in The Patty Duke Show. I knew he was their son, but I had never seen
any of his movies, even <i>The Lord of the Rings</i> (even though I had read
the books when I was young).</p><p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Sean Astin
came across as such a grounded and self-effacing person. He seemed genuinely
nice. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Never was this more apparent than
when he was telling the story of how an Anasazi elder had given him a trail
name: “Gentle Wind Eagle.” He told Sean ‘the eagle has the greatest vision of
all animals and you have the ability to see into people’s hearts.’<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Another thing
that came across was how important to him his wife and daughters are. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">He told us about
his eldest daughter’s interest in genealogy. She investigated their family background,
including the adopted and step members as well as the biologicals. When Sean
told her he was doing RootsTech she said that she could trace his ancestry back
to Charlemagne, but was stuck on one 4th great-grandfather on mother’s
side and one person other on his father’s side – could he please ask the FamilySsearch
people for help.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Sean texted
her and asked why she loved genealogy, and a reply came through: “‘It’s the way
to learn about the ancestors that live on through me. We are the key to our
ancestors’ eternal life & through my children in a way I’ll live on forever,
so it’s important to honor that … I think we all repeat certain generational
patterns and learning from my ancestry is the biggest cheat-sheet to solving
life’s greatest problems.” This is something that resonates with all of us who
are addicted to family history.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Sean’s mother
had told him stories when he was growing up, but he didn’t care, which he is
now embarrassed about. Even when his daughter was looking into their family
history he didn’t understand the attraction. Then Tamara from FamilySearch
presented him with his genealogy. And there is so much that suddenly bought it
alive – a great-grandfather who registered and served in WWI and as an old man
in WWII, and a grandfather who served in WWII. He was particularly fascinated
by the picture he was shown of the boat two of his ancestors came out on. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">He was
proud to learn that six of his eight great-grandparents had come from Ireland: “they
were workers”. His mother had said of him “you worked so hard for this success”,
which is one of the nicest things she’d said, and now he sees that that work
ethic didn’t just come from his mother, but comes down through his lineage. Sean
said that understanding where you come from really helps you become “more”. “This
is a way to bring us together. There are so many things that pull us apart”. When
asked what he wanted his grandchildren to focus on about him, he considered the
question and answered “kindness”.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghBojDuJ28WgCAVEI8ixYTFznAdDH17GI6gpllpvECo_2J985YYAsfpoue__iM_G5Cfp25sD3EX0SbzQRD3626yY1YK68GNSxFEtY93AYgMjwTfLWprcu3dU8WAf72y2VfcyqygOnIF8AmpxTmr3EJ5QSFIoGmA3YB3rTHvcj4_TOHw_crWRIuFTsm/s800/20230304_123529-001.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="493" data-original-width="800" height="197" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghBojDuJ28WgCAVEI8ixYTFznAdDH17GI6gpllpvECo_2J985YYAsfpoue__iM_G5Cfp25sD3EX0SbzQRD3626yY1YK68GNSxFEtY93AYgMjwTfLWprcu3dU8WAf72y2VfcyqygOnIF8AmpxTmr3EJ5QSFIoGmA3YB3rTHvcj4_TOHw_crWRIuFTsm/s320/20230304_123529-001.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>Next in

There is a great atmosphere there, and it has always been one of my favourite aspects of RootsTech.</p><p>Although smaller than the last few in-person conferences, it did not disappoint. Most of the major players were there (why were you missing Findmypast?), along with some new ones, and some previous ones who now took a bigger part.</p><p>There were the usual in-booth demos and special offers. I did manage to get around all the booths I was interested in, but didn't get to spend as much time as I'd have liked to have done as for the first time I had my own booth (Cite-Builder - the citation generator for genealogists) and was also giving three talks.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; I certainly enjoyed the presentations being online, but I missed seeing my friends in person.</p><p>Attending RootsTech many times (this was my 7th in person conference) meant I have made many good friends from all around the world. I finally got to see many of them again for the first time in years. RootsTech's theme of Uniting couldn't have been more appropriate.</p><p>Though there were several notable absences this year (and we raised a glass in memory of one of them), it was still wonderful to see those who were there.</p><p>More about other aspects of RootsTech in the next posts.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; previous two virtual conferences, the virtual conference this year will be
free, and it will be an opportunity for people all over the world to attend
RootsTech, even if they can’t travel to Salt Lake City. There will be over 200
virtual classes, so there will definitely be something there to interest you. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">As for the live
conference in SLC, registration will cost just US$98. This is a lot less than
previous in-person conferences, and this is not because it will be a lesser
experience, but to enable more people to be able to afford to attend. This cost
will give you access to all the classes, all the main stage events and so on.
You will, of course, be able to access the Expo Hall too, but so will people
who have not paid for registration. In other words, the Expo Hall will be free.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">I imagine
that some of you are wondering why you should attend the conference in person, since
the virtual conference is free. Well, firstly, not all of the in-person classes
will be live streamed. Some will, but not all. But the main reason is the buzz
and the energy of being there in the Salt Palace. It is a chance to be around
like-minded people who don’t roll their eyes when you talk about your latest
discovery. It’s a chance to talk in person to vendors, not just via chat. And
possibly to talk to the speakers to ask them more about their topic. The energy
and excitement of being there is fantastic to experience. There is also the
fact that for the days before and after the conference you can choose to go to
the Family History Library, which is just a block away from the Salt Palace.
This fantastic library still has so much for the genealogist to see and research,
as well as expert staff who can advise you on your area of interest.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Because
there has been disappointment in previous years when a class that people wanted
to attend in person was full, this time the classrooms will be bigger. The
smallest rooms will hold 500-600 people, because they don’t want people to miss
out. There will also be viewing spaces for small groups to watch some of the
online sessions and discuss them afterwards, or maybe to even have the speaker
there with them to discuss the subject,<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Even if you
only plan on attending the virtual conference, it is recommended (but not compulsory)
that you register. This will help the RootsTech organisers to keep you informed
of what is coming up, it will allow you to create a playlist of sessions that
you want to watch and to chat with speakers and other attendees. Registration
will open soon.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-_O2rNA4KQrC5qRqgs-McmqGAsLB51oV655rRvFDoLNnaqFOOOQtOckWX3puQ1ZbJ8CIHI4FiIZATHCX5H13rHRrDYLZdE77Q75wmU-popbChBrwZHMZ-PLCF-T2u298WdZV4xzWMsK0h1LIP6Shp3LejSmhlkDFD_miy3iluzbZsuLvJYayr2xcX/s4032/20180228_183550.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-_O2rNA4KQrC5qRqgs-McmqGAsLB51oV655rRvFDoLNnaqFOOOQtOckWX3puQ1ZbJ8CIHI4FiIZATHCX5H13rHRrDYLZdE77Q75wmU-popbChBrwZHMZ-PLCF-T2u298WdZV4xzWMsK0h1LIP6Shp3LejSmhlkDFD_miy3iluzbZsuLvJYayr2xcX/s320/20180228_183550.jpg" width="240" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The Expo Hall in 2018</td></tr></tbody></table><p></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">If you are
planning on only attending the virtual event, why not organise a “watch party”
with your friends or your local family history group?<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">And you will
be pleased to know that Relatives at RootsTech will be back. It will be
available for the virtual conference, but for those who are there in person, it
will highlight the fact that your relative is also there in person.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

was an online event again this year, which means that even even though the event has closed, we still have plenty of time (all year) to watch the talks. Which is just
as well because there are so many great talks to watch. But more of them in a
minute.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">First, I
want to make another comment on the theme of the conference: <b>#ChooseConnection.</b>
I have <a href="http://jennyalogy.blogspot.com/2022/03/if-only-putin-would-chooseconnection.html" target="_blank">already written</a> about the way this resonated for me with regards to the
current war in Ukraine, but I have also been making new connections of my own.
Three weeks ago we got a little puppy, Cassie. Because we have been taking her to the grass at the front of our home to do her business, and because she’s so
cute and adorable, people have been coming up to look at her and sometimes to
pat her. This means that I have got to know people who live two doors down, and
others from all over our estate. These are people who’ve been here for years
and years, but only now have I got to meet them. These are wonderful new
connections I have made! And it has enhanced my sense of community in the enclave
in which I live.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Anyway,
back to the talks in this year's RootsTech Connect. There are so many to choose from, and (unsurprisingly) I have
not yet had time to watch all the talks that I am interested in. But here are
some of the ones I have particularly enjoyed. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">First, just
some of the keynote speakers:<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Apollonia

<p class="MsoNormal"><b><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Matthew

to find that you had ancestors who lived within a stone’s throw of the place

<p class="MsoNormal"><b><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Molly Yeh</span></b><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"> – a wonderful story of the

my political opinions, but it is so relevant to the message of RootsTech
Connect 2022.</p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing"><b>NOTE: These opinions are my own and do not necessarily reflect
the views of FamilySearch International and RootsTech.</b></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><o:p></o:p></p>

I was watching
the news last night after the first day of this year’s RootsTech conference,
and the contrast between that message and the current Ukrainian situation
struck me so strongly. Steve Rockwood, CEO of FamilySearch International,
stated</p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing"></p><blockquote><i>‘When we say “connection” we mean connection to people:
our family and friends of today, our ancestors of the past, and connection to
those who are strangers today but as we discover our common ancestors, our
common homelands, they become close friends and even cousins of tomorrow. We mean
connection to the world, including our homelands; connection to our culture,
our heritage … We mean connection to principles. Principles of trust, love,
faith, honesty and compassion. And most of all connection to each other,
especially at this time when so much division is being thrust upon us<span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;">.</span><span style="font-size: 11pt;"><span style="font-family: times;">’</span></span></i></blockquote><span style="font-size: 11pt;"><span style="font-family: times;"></span></span><p></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing">This theme and the ideas and scripts were developed long
before the current situation commenced, yet they couldn’t be more relevant right
now. What is happening is horrifying and frightening.</p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing">Most of the world is united in its support of Ukraine and
condemnation of Russia. None of us want this to continue. Volodymyr Zelenskyy
begged Putin to talk to him face to face ‘I am your neighbour. I don’t bite.’ But
still it continues.</p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing">Back in 2018 Rockwood talked about the theme of that
RootsTech conference: “Connect. Belong”. He said that FamilySearch wants people
to connect, because when we connect we treat each other differently.
Connections can generate emotions, as with the discoveries LeVar Burton made in
2017 which brought him to tears.</p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing">If only Putin would agree to talk instead of attack, negotiate
instead of sending missiles, #chooseconnection instead of division we could return
to peace instead of standing on the brink of a disaster.</p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing">This is all very serious, I know, and it brings down the
mood, but as with so many of the RootsTech conferences, the messages and themes
resonate with me.</p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing">Back in 2017 when LeVar Burton spoke, he said that until
he saw people like Diahann Carroll in the sitcom Julia, and Clarence Williams
III in The Mod Squad, he had never before seen people like him starring on TV.
That comment has come back to me many times since then. It was a perspective that
I had never encountered before, though I should have realized it by myself. By
making the connection I did when listening to his keynote I understood the world
a little bit better from another point of view.</p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing">Whatever can bring that understanding can only help the
world. Finding out about your ancestors and ancestral homelands – especially if
that journey uncovers some surprises – can only help us connect with others and
contribute to making the world a better place.</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh3e2nGgY3j0lyarYUHD7D1cR7FuQpSTwD6Dp_cz1661_RlOvtJDegyE9-IwDZafbXSMCH2zr2ON42QO4ziqnYySrOv313eFY8MJ9Hi7fL8kyRoJ5qsvsygavsoF7h6PSs8amUdaaDB3hjdJJ0oRUUJzSz_fFMzVWPCT_d2M3Un3qma478Auz7NBMhl=s1600" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh3e2nGgY3j0lyarYUHD7D1cR7FuQpSTwD6Dp_cz1661_RlOvtJDegyE9-IwDZafbXSMCH2zr2ON42QO4ziqnYySrOv313eFY8MJ9Hi7fL8kyRoJ5qsvsygavsoF7h6PSs8amUdaaDB3hjdJJ0oRUUJzSz_fFMzVWPCT_d2M3Un3qma478Auz7NBMhl=s320" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">LeVar Burton after hearing about his family</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><b>NOTE: These opinions are my own and do not necessarily reflect the views of FamilySearch International and RootsTech.</b></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><o:p></o:p></p>jennyalogyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12026183619148478639noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2438205757745742517.post-68862565482569926272022-01-26T10:38:00.000+11:002022-01-26T10:38:12.881+11:00RootsTech Connect 2022 is coming soon<p> It is now
less than six weeks until RootsTech Connect 2022 starts (yikes! I’d better get
on and watch more of the 2021 talks, which are still available online).</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">Last year’s
conference was the first fully online conference, and it was excellent,
attracting 1.5 million viewers worldwide. But with more experience of this new online
world, this year’s conference promises to be even better!<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal">Three of
the keynote speakers have already been announced, and new speakers from around
the world will be announced each week. </p><p class="MsoNormal">Some of the memorable keynotes from the past were <a href="http://jennyalogy.blogspot.com/2017/02/levar-burtons-session-brings-us-all-to.html">LeVar Burton</a>, <a href="http://jennyalogy.blogspot.com/2019/10/discover-more-about-your-ancestors-and.html">Donny Osmond</a>, <a href="http://jennyalogy.blogspot.com/2019/03/belonging.html">Saroo Brierley and Jake Shimabukuro</a>, <a href="http://jennyalogy.blogspot.com/2017/02/our-genealogy-is-coming-alive-through.html">Cece Moore</a> and <a href="http://jennyalogy.blogspot.com/2019/10/walk-ground-your-ancestors-walked-to.html">Dan Snow</a>. <p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">So what
does this year have in store?<o:p></o:p></span></p>

A major driver in its establishment was to enforce the laws that prohibited Catholics from owning land or entering into leases longer than 31 years. It was never compulsory to register a deed, so not all transactions are recorded, but by 1833 when the numbering system changed, over 600,000 documents had been recorded. </div><div><br /></div><div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbmwDeoQHUZTfZKLpOEIJyRF6XN7NBsSGFgVI0bNrR6r3GW-F8tXPYdTLwFaHytjLU-D4RsQK3w1o38QL0WOnDcBvP_P8tR-jTWN6G_p3w4MYQZ-dYGr5otID5tWxrT-nh2XDmCZB9ZUc/s778/Tombstone_Books_by_Nick.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="583" data-original-width="778" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbmwDeoQHUZTfZKLpOEIJyRF6XN7NBsSGFgVI0bNrR6r3GW-F8tXPYdTLwFaHytjLU-D4RsQK3w1o38QL0WOnDcBvP_P8tR-jTWN6G_p3w4MYQZ-dYGr5otID5tWxrT-nh2XDmCZB9ZUc/w320-h240/Tombstone_Books_by_Nick.JPG" title="Tombstone Books in the Registry of Deeds. They are not true copies of the original document, but contain all relevant information relating to the land transaction or transfer. Amongst the documents recorded are land sales, leases, mortgages, marriage settlements and even wills. Anything that might relate to land could be included. The wills are a particularly valuable inclusion because all the original wills were destroyed in the fire in the Four Courts in Dublin in 1922 and this may be the only source of the information included in a will. </div><div><br /></div><div>Among the things you might discover that will help you build your family tree include names and relationships, ages and death dates, wives' maiden names, and residences. </div><div><br /></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQjWnqeqDyGJdyfYGreDGdQpv2260WeB-L6g6dAZPZgWa0vQaLqrI7eMLlYOSaKSA9Drh7_0i5G9NVRG8rRu-Mr8uOxNXK-tXLQjh6TML4McLy6R_-2y8TAGr25xL59LJdV-uUZlSScdM/s2048/1756+180.157.119967+f7905911+i643.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1371" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQjWnqeqDyGJdyfYGreDGdQpv2260WeB-L6g6dAZPZgWa0vQaLqrI7eMLlYOSaKSA9Drh7_0i5G9NVRG8rRu-Mr8uOxNXK-tXLQjh6TML4McLy6R_-2y8TAGr25xL59LJdV-uUZlSScdM/s320/1756+180.157.119967+f7905911+i643.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Example of a page from one of the<br />Tombstone Books</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><div>Two sets of indexes were created to allow access to the Deeds. The first is the Grantor Index. The name of the primary grantor, and occasionally a second grantor, can be used as a finding aid. It does not always include all grantors, and it never indexes the grantees. The second index is the Land or Place Index which includes the location as well as listing the primary grantor. Later versions of these particular indexes also include the name of the primary grantee. Thus it is worth working through both sets of indexes to find any memorials that might be of interest. These indexes will give you the information you need to look through the books of deeds to find the memorial of interest. </div><div><br /></div><div>So who would register a document? It was not only wealthy landlords, but can even be some of the most humble tenants, though generally it will be the middle class and above. Merchants were very well represented amongst those registering documents, if only because a registered deed took precedence over an unregistered one if there was any dispute. In theory, Catholics would not be able to register a deed unless it was a lease for less than 31 years, but I have seen some leases registered for Catholics for longer periods. As there was a cost of registration the humble labourer or small holder would probably not register one. However, they might still be mentioned, particularly in relation to identifying the location of a property ("north of the stream and west of Patrick Murphy's cottage"). </div><div><br /></div><div> As mentioned, it might be only the primary grantor and primary grantee that listed in the indexes. Yet a deed can list many, many more names. One deed is known to list 196 names! In order to try and slowly build up a full index to all the names in the deeds, the Registry of Deeds Index Project website has been set up (http://irishdeedsindex.net). This free site allows you to search deeds that have been indexed and to enter details of deeds you have found yourself. </div><div><br /></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKVvSD1Yqzt2SrtmbP5pxJ1c068q0kFBOlrvLmBffvgFRDTHEIS-A29C5GbQl4CN86auulFfa5NahAnSNZoU803CtxT1hgQAzmuWpnubglkDqGo9qQVwTpb886hm6474ukQb1T0CsQj-c/s1841/Home+page+Jun+2021.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="535" data-original-width="1841" height="116" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKVvSD1Yqzt2SrtmbP5pxJ1c068q0kFBOlrvLmBffvgFRDTHEIS-A29C5GbQl4CN86auulFfa5NahAnSNZoU803CtxT1hgQAzmuWpnubglkDqGo9qQVwTpb886hm6474ukQb1T0CsQj-c/w400-h116/Home+page+Jun+2021.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;">The Registry of Deeds Index Project homepage (http://irishdeedsindex.net). </span></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><div><br /></div><div>It is easy now to access the indexes and deeds. Shepherd, <i>Historical Atlas</i>, <br />1923 (Public domain)<br /><br /></td></tr></tbody></table><br />A <b>Manor</b> (from the Latin <i>manerium</i>) was the basic
social and economic unit of society in England from before the Norman Conquest.
They do not have a specific date when they ceased to play an important role as it
varied from manor to manor, but it was often well into the 17th and
18th centuries, though some manors continued to hold manorial courts
into the 19th and 20th centuries.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="Default">A manor does not map onto a parish or village: it might cover
several parishes, or only part of one parish, or part of one parish and part,
or all, of other parishes. Neither does it map onto a village. A manor might
consist of a village and its lands, or a single village might contain two or
more manors, or a manor might cover land in more than one township</p><p class="Default"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="Default">Basically, it is the series lands held by one lord, though a
lord might hold more than one manor. That lord might be holding the land directly
from the crown, or from another tenant-in-chief, or a combination of both. Prior
to the dissolution, a manor might have also been held by a religious house,
such as an Abbey or Monastery. Are you confused yet?</p><p class="Default"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="Default">Manors could vary in size: some were small and some were very
large.</p><p class="Default"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="Default">The manor consisted of the land the lord retained for his own
use, known as his demesne (pronounced “domain”), the land that was tenanted
out, the land for common usage, and the waste (areas not cultivated).</p><p class="Default"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="Default">There were two main types of tenants. <b>Unfree tenants</b>,
or <b>villeins</b>, held their land on condition not only of paying rent, but
also of rendering services to the lord, such as working his land for a certain number
of days, helping to repair the manorial mill, or providing goods, such as
butter, eggs, etc. The other type of tenants were the <b>free tenants</b>, who
held their land by payments of rent and sometimes by some services. The types
of services in each case depended on the customs of the manor.</p><p class="Default"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="Default">Before the Black Death unfree tenants were not able to leave
the lord’s land and go and work elsewhere unless the lord gave his permission.
Villein tenants came to be known as <b>customary tenants</b> and villein tenure
evolved to become <b>copyhold </b>tenure. The tenant’s title was written into
the manor court rolls, and he was given a copy as proof of his title. On the
death of a tenant the land transfer had to go through the manor courts, and
required the payment of a heriot – a money payment or the tenant’s best beast –
before the land could be transferred. Other transfers of copyhold land required
the payment of an entry fine to the lord. Copyhold tenure was not abolished
until 1925.</p><p class="Default"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="Default">Free tenants held their land absolutely and were not subject
to the customs of the manor. The tenant could devise or sell his land at will (<b>freehold</b>).
As with copyhold land, a heriot had to be paid on the death of a tenant to
allow the land to be transferred to his heir. The heir of the land, or
purchaser if it had been sold, also had to pay a <b>relief</b> to the lord of
the manor before taking up the land. The relief was usually a cash payment to
the value of one year’s rent.</p><p class="Default"><o:p></o:p></p>

lease might be for a single year, for 21 years, or for three lives. The terms
by which land was leased out were set by the lord of the manor.</p><p class="Default"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="Default">Over time some tenants came to hold different portions of land
under each type tenure, though not all manors had all three types of tenure.</p><p class="Default"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="Default">There were also other people living on the manor who were not
tenants, as they held no land. They were employed as labourers by the lord or a
well-off freeholder. They may have had a cottage with a small garden and were
called <b>cottars</b> or <b>bordars</b>.</p><p class="Default"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="Default">Tenants had certain rights, like pasturing a beast on the
common, taking turves of peat from the common, of having access to certain amounts
of wood, plants or thatching material. Tenants had to have their grain ground at
the Lord’s mill, and had to pay a fee for this.</p><p class="Default"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="Default">Each manor had its own customs, which included these rights,
but included other matters as well. The rights were upheld by the manor courts,

Connect, and it’s very impressive. Just
as Netflix lets you binge watch your favourite series like <i>The Crown</i> or <i>Line

will let you binge on Genealogy.</p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing">So far over 300,000 people from more than 200 countries and

two sessions <i><b>10 things you are probably doing wrong with your research</b> </i>and

day will be repeated on the second day with the sessions in a different order (to

afterwards the content will be available on demand for a year. The timetable

2021 is going to be a bit different. It even has a different name – RootsTech Connect.
In case you have been living in total isolation (hang on, hasn’t everyone?) and
haven’t heard the news, RootsTech Connect will be 100% online and 100% free.
All you need to do is register at <a href="https://www.rootstech.org/" target="_blank">https://www.rootstech.org/</a>.
This new online conference will mean no crowds, no jetlag and no expensive
hotels.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVq8EDKuwQJ2HwdaL90qGkASVjcdBo0PnAbvbVtv1rXHJtDJ3XmX3fbiYwueOwsXMmmiXxuJ94a8mTKIqz63n6NYEea6VCG8PrIJQUeDnKh1_nFu21aMzFhgeNXYxMhlX1i8cqIvPY_qc/s702/image001.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="234" data-original-width="702" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVq8EDKuwQJ2HwdaL90qGkASVjcdBo0PnAbvbVtv1rXHJtDJ3XmX3fbiYwueOwsXMmmiXxuJ94a8mTKIqz63n6NYEea6VCG8PrIJQUeDnKh1_nFu21aMzFhgeNXYxMhlX1i8cqIvPY_qc/s320/image001.png" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>Since this
conference will not involve a trip to Salt Lake City in person, I won’t tease
you with pictures of the Family History Library.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">As the Expo
Hall will be online, pictures of the Expo Hall in previous years won’t be
relevant. But rest assured, there will be Exhibitors.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Neither is
it relevant to show you pictures of the people I could catch up with at the
conference.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">So what can
I show you to whet your appetite and tempt you to attend RootsTech Connect in
2021?<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Well, there
will still be speakers.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Even more of
them than we’ve had in the past. We have had some really great speakers and really great talks in the
past, and this year will be no different.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>The speakers haven’t been officially announced yet, but I have heard
some whispers and there are some fantastic speakers, many of which have never

some incredibly <b>EXCITING</b> news about RootsTech 2021.</p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing">Ever
since the first RootsTech conference in 2011, the conference has been taking
place in the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City. Now the Covid virus has forced that
to change.</p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing">But it’s
a good change! RootsTech 2021 will be a
virtual online event called <b>RootsTech Connect</b>. It will have all the keynotes,
classes, entertainment and even the Expo Hall of the Salt Lake City, but you
will be able to access it all from your own home at your own pace. In 2021
RootsTech will <b>come to YOU.</b></p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing">That
means you don’t have to pay for airfare or accommodation. You don’t even have
to pay for the conference itself, as it will be <b>completely free!</b> That’s
a good price by anyone’s standards.</p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing">Having a
free online RootsTech means that more people will be able to “attend” than ever
before. It opens up the conference to those who can’t travel, those who can’t
take time off work, and those who can’t afford to attend an in-person
conference.</p><p class="MsoNoSpacing">The conference will take place 25-27 Feb 2021 (not the previously advertised 3-6 Feb for the in-person conference).</p>

<div class="MsoNoSpacing">RootsTech
2020 in Salt Lake City saw several announcements about FamilySearch.</div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<br /></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqzGi9JMEV4A2xPmA8-qgna9iZGx1cN7fGdg_f7cfFC5mUfcHQOzb28cvRHPJAymP6KipqZH0k956ZqFIEcNKfXdhzjDTZVbcFoxT2KY9C28KRN8cJvZKuyThAKQRGjdmOiPMX-VPRd_0/s2543/20200226_084030.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1236" data-original-width="2543" height="249" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqzGi9JMEV4A2xPmA8-qgna9iZGx1cN7fGdg_f7cfFC5mUfcHQOzb28cvRHPJAymP6KipqZH0k956ZqFIEcNKfXdhzjDTZVbcFoxT2KY9C28KRN8cJvZKuyThAKQRGjdmOiPMX-VPRd_0/w512-h249/20200226_084030.jpg" width="512" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">What's new on FamilySearch session<br /></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><div class="MsoNoSpacing">The
first is that FamilySearch have a big problem: they are filming new resources
much faster than they are indexing them, so the backlog is getting greater and
greater. They currently have 18 petabytes of records digitised (a petabyte is
one thousand million million), which is 72 times bigger than the Library of Congress.
Even with crowd-sourcing using their 310,000 indexers who add 2 million new
names per day, the gap between the number of images captured and the number
indexed is still growing. The problem has been exacerbated by the long time it
was taking from photographing a record to getting it online (on average 249
days) as there were lots of things to be checked, metadata to develop and so
on.</div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<span lang="" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">The
really exciting news is that they have developed new processes which means it
now takes only 24 hours to get new images online.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>These are, of course, not indexed images.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>To tackle the indexing bottleneck,
FamilySearch is working on having the computer automatically read and index the
text, along with relationships mentioned in the record. This is a process called
Optical Character Recognition (OCR). FamilySearch are also working on computer
handwriting recognition. This is progressing, but is not perfect, and neither
is OCR. But now indexers and other users have the opportunity to correct
incorrectly indexed entries. Not only does this make the record easier to find,
but it teaches the computer about what is correct and what isn’t.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<span lang="" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">And don’t
make the mistake of assuming the records being filmed and indexed are mainly
American ones. More of the recent ones are European, but there are also records
from South Africa, Asia and South America and even the Republic of the Congo. </span>To find
out the what is being added, click on “View the most recently added images” at <a href="https://www.familysearch.org/records/images/">https://www.familysearch.org/records/images/</a>,
or enter a place of interest in the search box on that web page.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
These moves will allow for rapid access to content, but indexing
volunteers are still needed to index records which will serve to train the
computers to get smarter and better at reading the records themselves.<span lang="" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<span lang="" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Other
announcement made at RootsTech relate to the <b>FamilySearch Family Tree. </b>Below is an interview with Ron <o:p></o:p></span>Tanner from FamilySearch about the tree.</div><div class="MsoNoSpacing"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/fyb72EdsyUM" width="320" youtube-src-id="fyb72EdsyUM"></iframe></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNoSpacing">In summary, new relationship
tags have been added. As well as being able to enter a marriage, divorce or
annulment for a couple, the couple relationship can be tagged as “Common Law
Marriage” or “Lived Together”.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>You can
also add a relationship fact to say that this couple never had any children.</div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<span lang="" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">A key
aim for the FamilySearch Family Tree is to reduce the poor changes to the tree.
If someone attempts to add a child to a couple that is listed as never having
children, the system will generate a warning. Part of the strategy to stop
these poor changes is to focus on “Hints” and “Possible Duplicates”, so that
FamilySearch only shows those it things it thinks are perfect, not those it
thinks “might be possible, but might not be correct”.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<span lang="" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">There
is also a new merge function.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This will result in a multi-stage merge.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing"><ol style="text-align: left;"><li><span lang="" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Look</span></li><li><span lang="" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Decide
what to change</span></li><li><span lang="" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Preview</span></li><li><span lang="" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Give a reason and finish.</span></li></ol>
</div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">The
process will give warnings if there are data problems, such as dates
(e.g. date of birth) between the potential merge more than about 5 years different, birth and
death more than 25 miles apart, and anything
else that will create a data problem, such as having someone marry their own
parent.</div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<span lang="" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">A bit of
fun that has been added to FamilySearch is the integration of some of the
features from the Discovery Centers into the online FamilySearch site.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>These can be accessed from a new menu group
at the top of the page entitled “Activities”.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>This is only available through the web version, not through the App,
though it can be used on a mobile device via a browser.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing">

<br />
Christmas is over, the New Year has come and gone, the Valentine's Day flowers are wilting, so now it's time to plan for the 10th RootsTech conference. In less than two weeks the event in Salt Lake City will be upon us.<br />
<br />
RootsTech is the largest genealogy conference in the world, and this year it will take place 26-29 February at the Salt Palace Convention Centre. As a 10th anniversary is rather special, the General Session at 4.30pm on Wednesday will not have an invited Keynote speaker. Instead it we will have FamilySearch's Steve Rockwood and a look back at the past decade and how far the family history industry has come.<br />
<br />
On the other days there will be Keynote Speakers, as usual: on Thursday there will be Leigh Anne Tuohy (who helped NFL player Michael Oher to rise to fame and whose story is told in the Academy Award winning film <i>The Blind Side</i>), on Friday David Kennerly (photographer of famous people and international conflicts) will be the Keynote, and Saturday's keynote will be Emmitt Smith (originally a footballer, and now a businessman and entrepreneur). More information about these people can be found on the <a href="https://www.rootstech.org/salt-lake-2020-speakers" target="_blank">RootsTech Speakers page</a>.<br />
<br />
In addition, the stand-up comedian Ryan Hamilton will perform on the Friday night.<br />
<br />
All of this is included in your registration, along with the classes, admission to the Expo Hall, and the demos and short presentations in the Expo Hall.<br />
<br />
If you have not yet registered, you can get a special discount until 11.59pm MST (Mountain Standard Time, i.e. Salt Lake City time) on 17 February. Use the code FLASH to save $40 off a 4-day pass or $20 off a 1-day pass.<br />
<br />
If you can't make it to RootsTech in person, how about watching some of the live-streamed sessions? The schedule for these sessions is available online <a href="https://www.rootstech.org/salt-lake/live-stream-schedule" target="_blank">at this link</a>. While the time these are on is not great if you are in Australia or New Zealand, they will be available online after the event and you will be able to watch them for free. The other option you might be interested in is the <a href="https://www.rootstech.org/salt-lake/virtual-pass" target="_blank">Virtual Pass</a>. For $US129 the pass will allow you to watch another 30 recordings that will never be available for free. The list of them is available <a href="https://www.rootstech.org/salt-lake/virtual-pass" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />

<div style="-en-clipboard: true; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
They say a picture paints a thousand words, but how many words could the man who took the pictures tell? The Keynote Speaker for Friday 28 February at the <a href="https://www.rootstech.org/" target="_blank">2020 RootsTech conference</a> in Salt Lake City will certainly be able to tell some stories. And it's not too late to enter my competition to win a free 4-day pass to RootsTech (see the details at my competition post <a href="https://jennyalogy.blogspot.com/2019/12/win-free-pass-to-rootstech-2020-or-get.html" target="_blank">here</a>).</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
Although billed in the <a href="https://media.familysearch.org/white-house-photographer-david-kennerly-to-keynote-rootstech-2020/?fbclid=IwAR0YF1s7DVOSbhERbrZ_XsfwOhrFp3ol4ALvNsc5egtK8CckXK_aangS5GY" target="_blank">RootsTech press release</a> as "David Hume Kennerly, Pulitzer Prize—winning White House photographer", his body of work is not restricted to US politics. In fact the <a href="https://kennerly.ccp.arizona.edu/" target="_blank">website of the Center for Creative Photography</a>, which hosts an archive of Kennerly's photos, says</div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
<span style="color: #212121; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><i>"The tale of David Hume Kennerly’s career as a photojournalist began with documenting politicians and musicians who visited his hometown of Portland, Oregon in the 1960s. These beginnings spurred over five decades of globetrotting, as Kennerly lived witnessing our world through his camera lens."</i></span></blockquote>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
As well as confronting photos from Vietnam, Cambodia and Jonestown, the archive includes pictures of Mick Jagger, Igor Stravinsky, Joe Frazier landing a blow on Muhammad Ali's head, Diana Ross, Mia Farrow and Dustin Hoffman, Miles Davis, and the set of the TV show <span style="font-style: italic;">Seinfeld.</span> One fascinating section of the archive is entitled <a href="https://kennerly.ccp.arizona.edu/galleries/photojournalist" target="_blank">"A Photojournalist's Life in Pictures"</a>, containing photos of Kennerley taken by other photographers, which shine a light of the mechanics of his photography.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
Looking at this archive I am certain that Kennerly will have many interesting stories to tell when he Keynote's RootsTech's 10<span style="font-size: smaller; vertical-align: super;">th</span> conference in Salt Lake City on 26-29 February 2020.</div>
